A heavy rain warning is currently in effect across the entire Fiji Group, prompting officials to also issue a flash flood alert for all low-lying areas, flood-prone regions, and small streams. The Fiji Meteorological Service has indicated that Tropical Depression TD03F is responsible for these weather conditions, which are set to bring heavy rain and strong winds as it develops.
TD03F is slowly moving to the northeast of Vanuatu and is expected to enter Fiji waters by tomorrow, continuing its path eastward through Fiji and exiting via the Lau Group by late Wednesday. As the system interacts with the existing trough of low pressure, the country is experiencing overcast conditions alongside persistent rainfall, with saturated soils raising concerns of flooding.
The forecast includes strong northerly winds reaching speeds of up to 50 km/h, with gusts potentially hitting 70 km/h, particularly in northern Vanua Levu, the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, as well as northern Lau and Lomaiviti. Mariners are advised to exercise caution, as winds are expected to peak at 15 to 20 knots, worsening to 30 knots with stronger gusts by Wednesday, leading to rough seas and poor visibility.
In response to these severe weather warnings, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) is urging all road users to take necessary precautions while traveling. LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa emphasized the importance of careful driving during such adverse weather conditions, stating that the heavy rain increases the risk of road accidents.
Motorists are recommended to adjust their driving habits to match the conditions by reducing speed, increasing following distances, and avoiding abrupt maneuvers that may lead to loss of control. Ensuring that headlights are operational during heavy rainfall, and that windscreen wipers, brakes, tyres, and lights are functioning correctly before starting any journey is also vital.
Drivers must stay alert, particularly in areas known for flooding, landslips, or falling debris. Rokosawa warned against attempting to drive through flooded roads, as the depth of water can be deceptive, and strong currents can easily sweep vehicles off the road. If visibility deteriorates or conditions worsen, it is advised that motorists either slow down or safely pull over until it is safe to proceed.
With the proper precautions and responsible driving behavior, road users can navigate these challenging conditions while prioritizing their safety and that of others.
