Fiji is bracing for a bout of severe weather as Tropical Disturbance TD03F approaches the nation, with predictions of heavy rain, flooding, and strong winds in the coming days. The Fiji Meteorological Service has indicated that the disturbance is currently moving slowly over the waters between the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, with expectations to shift southeast and enter Fiji waters by Tuesday. The system is projected to exit through the Lau Group by Wednesday.

A heavy rain alert has been issued for the entire Fiji Group, with a specific flash flood alert in effect for low-lying and flood-prone areas, as well as small streams. The ongoing influence of an active trough of low pressure associated with TD03F is already causing cloudy conditions and intermittent rain across the country. Given that the ground is already saturated, further heavy rainfall will likely increase the risk of flash flooding, particularly in vulnerable low-lying areas and downstream of major rivers.

The rain is set to intensify starting Tuesday as the disturbance approaches from the west, eventually spreading across the country by Wednesday. With the increased rainfall, the potential for flooding on major rivers, roads, and crossings poses risks to transportation, businesses, and essential services.

Additionally, strong northwest to northeast winds are anticipated from Tuesday through Wednesday. Winds could reach speeds of up to 50 kilometers per hour, with gusts potentially hitting 70 kilometers per hour in parts of Vanua Levu and Viti Levu, as well as the Yasawa, Mamanuca, northern Lau, and Lomaiviti Groups. Mariners should exercise caution, with northeast winds predicted at 15 to 20 knots, resulting in moderate to rough seas and poor visibility in heavy rain and thunderstorms. Expect wind speeds to escalate to 30 knots, with gusts up to 40 knots across all Fiji waters from Tuesday.

The Fiji Meteorological Service has assured residents that conditions are expected to improve by Thursday. Citizens are advised to remain vigilant, stay informed with official weather updates, and take necessary precautions as the forecasted unsettled weather unfolds. In these challenging times, community preparedness and individual awareness can play crucial roles in safety.
