A low-pressure system is moving toward Fiji, prompting authorities to issue a heavy rain alert for the Northern Division and Yasawa Group. The system, expected to intensify and potentially enter Fiji waters by Sunday, could bring strong winds, heavy rainfall, and increased risks of flooding and landslides.

Acting Permanent Secretary for Rural & Maritime Development and Disaster Risk Management, Salaseini Daunabuna, emphasized the importance of individual, family, and community readiness as cyclone season approaches. She noted, “Being prepared for such events is crucial.”

The National Emergency Operations Centre, along with Divisional Emergency Operation Centres, is diligently monitoring the evolving situation. In light of potential evacuations from flood-prone areas, evacuation centers are being set up, and the Fiji Police Force is on standby to assist as needed.

Daunabuna advised the public to limit travel during heavy rain periods due to heightened risks of flooding and landslides. Community leaders have been urged to ensure compliance with official advisories and to keep residents indoors during adverse weather.

Motorists are advised to exercise caution and avoid traveling through flooded roads. For updates on road closures, the Fiji Roads Authority’s Facebook page and Emergency Dashboard are recommended resources. Families are encouraged to stock up on essential supplies, including food, water, power sources, first aid kits, and medications, to ensure self-sufficiency in case of service disruptions.

Moreover, the community is reminded to take personal responsibility for safety, particularly regarding vulnerable individuals. Keeping informed and prepared as the weather situation develops is vital.

In the past weeks, similar heavy rain warnings have been issued across Fiji due to a persistent trough of low pressure. Such extreme weather events remind residents of the dynamic nature of Fiji’s climate and underscore the importance of preparedness. With every individual’s efforts, communities can cohesively navigate these challenges and support one another during difficult times.
