Fiji is preparing for potentially severe weather as a tropical disturbance is forecasted to affect the islands starting this Sunday. The disturbance is anticipated to bring heavy rainfall and strong winds, leading to fears of flooding, prompting officials to urge residents to take necessary precautions.

Salaseini Daunabuna, the acting permanent secretary for Disaster Risk Management, addressed the pressing need for preparedness during a recent press conference. She emphasized that ensuring safety is a collective effort among Fijians and highlighted the critical role of community readiness in times of crisis.

The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued warnings about strong winds impacting the Northern Division and northeastern regions of Viti Levu, including the Yasawa, Mamanuca, Lau, and Lomaiviti groups. A heavy rainfall alert is also in effect for the entire Northern Division and Yasawa Group.

Daunabuna mentioned that a low-pressure system situated to the northwest of Fiji is expected to gain strength as it progresses southeast towards Fiji’s waters by Sunday. She warned of possible traffic disruptions and road closures, urging motorists to avoid flooded areas for their safety.

In anticipation of harsh weather conditions, Daunabuna encouraged households to prepare by stocking essential supplies such as food, water, emergency power, and necessary medications for several days, given the likelihood of service interruptions due to flooding. She underscored the risk of strong winds and landslides, stressing the importance of staying informed about the situation through official weather updates.

Emergency services, including the Fiji Police Force, are prepared to assist with evacuations if necessary. The National Disaster Management Office has recommended various safety measures, advising individuals to avoid non-essential travel, particularly in areas vulnerable to flooding, and encouraging community leaders to collaborate with the government to ensure everyone’s safety.

This challenging situation reminds us of the resilience and solidarity inherent in Fijian communities during natural threats. By coming together and engaging in proactive safety measures, Fijians can effectively mitigate the impacts of the impending severe weather event, reinforcing the sense of unity and support that strengthens their communities in times of crisis.
