A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for parts of Fiji, prompting authorities to advise the public to take immediate safety precautions. The National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi released the warning at 2 PM, affecting the interior and southern regions of Viti Levu, spanning from Sigatoka through the Coral Coast to Navua, as well as southern Vanua Levu, including southern Bua and Cakaudrove.

Forecasters have noted that daytime heating has sparked thunderstorm activity across the inland sections of these two main islands. These thunderstorms are anticipated to intensify and shift southward, impacting the southern districts. The severe storms are likely to unleash intense heavy rainfall, elevating the risk of flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas within a matter of hours. Additionally, frequent and dangerous lightning strikes are expected to accompany the storms.

To stay safe, the public is urged to exercise caution by avoiding flooded creeks and drains, as well as refraining from walking, cycling, or driving through floodwaters. It is crucial to unplug electrical appliances and computers if lightning is visible or thunder is heard. Those caught outdoors during lightning activity should minimize their height and seek refuge quickly in a building rather than under trees, which are considered unsafe.

Authorities recommend that residents remain indoors, steer clear of windows, and keep children inside, as thunderstorms with heavy rainfall and lightning are likely to persist into the late afternoon or evening. While these storms may impact various areas, their unpredictable nature means that not all locations will experience the same level of severity.

As Fiji faces this weather challenge, it serves as a reminder for communities to remain vigilant and prepared for sudden weather changes, ensuring the safety of all residents during severe conditions.
