La Niña conditions currently affecting Fiji are anticipated to result in increased rainfall in various regions over the coming weeks and months, as indicated by the latest Early Action Rainfall Watch (EAR Watch) issued on February 10. This forecast is crucial for the Fiji National Disaster Management Office and related stakeholders, providing insight into recent rainfall patterns and future expectations to enhance preparedness efforts against possible weather-related challenges.

The upcoming weeks, particularly between February 15 and 28, show a medium probability of significantly wetter conditions for areas including Nacocolevu, the Coral Coast, and the interior of Viti Levu. Conversely, Rotuma is predicted to experience a medium chance of markedly dry conditions during the same timeframe, though there are no extreme rainfall warnings for other regions across the nation.

For the month of February as a whole, a high likelihood of very wet weather is forecasted along the Ba to Nacocolevu corridor, Coral Coast, interior Viti Levu, Mamanuca Group, Lakeba, and parts of the Lau Group, both northern and southern. Looking ahead to March 2026, the EAR Watch projects a strong chance of very wet conditions specifically for Ono-i-Lau, while other areas such as Dobuilevu to Nacocolevu corridor, Mamanuca Group, and several others may also experience wet conditions, though no extreme rainfall alerts are currently active.

Meteorological experts caution that La Niña typically amplifies rainfall across Fiji, thereby heightening the risks of flooding, landslips, and related disruptions, particularly in lower-lying and flood-vulnerable communities. In response, disaster management officials are urging communities to stay alert, follow weather updates diligently, and proactively implement measures to mitigate risks associated with the anticipated wetter-than-normal conditions under La Niña.

The proactive steps being advised are crucial for safeguarding lives and livelihoods as Fiji navigates the potential impacts of these weather patterns. By fostering community awareness and preparedness, Fiji is better equipped to manage the challenges posed by changing climatic conditions.
