Tropical disturbance 09F is forecasted to strengthen as it tracks southward toward Fiji. The Fiji Meteorological Service has indicated that the system will reach Fiji’s waters later today, potentially leading to the development of an active trough. Residents should brace for strong winds ranging from 50 to 60 km/h, with gusts that could hit 80 km/h by tomorrow.

The impacts of the disturbance are anticipated primarily in the eastern regions, including Vanua Levu, Cikobia, Naqele Levu, Taveuni, and the Northern Lau group. These areas can expect heavy rainfall and squally thunderstorms to commence today as southeasterly to south-westerly winds take hold.

Additionally, moderate to fresh southeasterly winds may affect parts of Eastern and Northern Viti Levu (from Tailevu North to Tavua), along with the Yasawa and Mamanuca Islands, Southern Lomaiviti, the remainder of the Lau Group, and Kadavu. Similar alerts for heavy rain and thunderstorms apply to these regions.

This event parallels earlier disturbances like TD01F, which caused significant weather disruptions, highlighting the ongoing necessity for community readiness. As Fiji navigates these tumultuous weather conditions, there is a chance for communities to unite and provide support to one another. The importance of solidarity and preparedness cannot be overstated, as it plays a crucial role in reducing the impacts of severe weather.

Communities are urged to remain vigilant, stay updated with weather alerts, and take proactive precautions to ensure safety during this anticipated weather event. There is hope that through collective resilience, residents will overcome the challenges posed by this disturbance.
