Fijians are urged to stay alert as Tropical Depression 09F has been escalated to Tropical Cyclone Rae, currently positioned near Udu Point on Vanua Levu and advancing southward towards Fiji. Misaele Funaki, Director of the Fiji Meteorological Service, indicated that the cyclone has the potential to evolve into a Category 1 cyclone.

Residents in the Eastern Division, especially those in Lau, Lomaiviti, and Vanua Levu, should brace for severe weather conditions. Authorities have warned the public to avoid flood-prone areas and refrain from crossing flooded roads or rivers. Caution is particularly emphasized for travel during this time. The National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO) recommends that households secure their properties, stock up on emergency supplies, and remain indoors.

In a precautionary measure, the Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro, announced the closure of all schools in Lau, Lomaiviti, and Vanua Levu, while schools in other areas will stay operational.

Several weather alerts are currently in effect:
– Gale warnings for eastern Vanua Levu, Cikobia, Naqele Levu, Taveuni, Lau, and Lomaiviti.
– Strong wind warnings for the remainder of Vanua Levu, northeastern Viti Levu, and nearby islands.
– Heavy rain warnings have been issued for the Northern Division, Lau, Lomaiviti, and now extend across all of Fiji.

As winds are anticipated to pick up, there’s a call for community solidarity, reminiscent of past events where unity has helped lessen the impact of severe weather. Residents are encouraged to remain informed, supportive, and resilient, fostering a collective strength to navigate this cyclone’s challenges effectively. Together, resilience can be a powerful tool to weather the storm ahead.
