A topical disturbance designated as TD 01F is currently approaching the Fiji Group and is expected to contribute to heavy rainfall in the region until tomorrow. According to the Fiji Meteorological Service, the disturbance was situated approximately 240km west of Yasawa-i-rara and 270km west northwest of Nadi as of noon today, moving southeast at roughly 20km/hr.

In light of the situation, a heavy rain warning has been issued for the entirety of the Fiji Group. Additionally, a strong wind warning is in effect for coastal areas along the western and northern sections of Viti Levu, including regions from Sigatoka to Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, and extending to Tavua and Rakiraki. The warning also applies to the interior areas of Ba, Ra, Nadroga/Navosa, as well as the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, Vatulele, Kadavu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni, and nearby smaller islands, including Lau and the Lomaiviti groups.

Flood alerts have been activated for all areas susceptible to flooding, particularly those adjacent to and downstream of major rivers. There’s also a flash flood warning in place for low-lying regions and small streams on Vanua Levu and the interior and western areas of Viti Levu, which are particularly vulnerable to flash flooding.

As TD01F approaches Fiji later today, the weather is expected to bring periods of rain—potentially heavy at times—along with occasional thunderstorms. The system is forecasted to move through the region and exit by tomorrow. The continued rainfall could exacerbate the already saturated ground conditions, leading to localized heavy rainfalls that may result in flash flooding.

As river levels rise across Fiji due to the anticipated rains, authorities urge residents in flood-prone areas to stay alert and be prepared for potential flooding.

This weather event highlights the importance of being cautious during such disturbances, but it also serves as a reminder of the resilience of the Fijian communities, who are accustomed to adapting to challenging weather conditions. Residents encourage each other to stay informed and heed safety precautions during this period.
