A Topical Disturbance (TD 01F), which has a slight chance of developing into a Tropical Cyclone, is anticipated to bring significant rainfall to the Fiji Group until tomorrow.

As per the Fiji Meteorological Service, TD01F was situated approximately 240 kilometers west of Yasawa-i-rara or 270 kilometers west-northwest of Nadi at noon today, moving southeast at a speed of around 20 kilometers per hour.

A heavy rain warning has been issued for the entirety of the Fiji group, alongside a strong wind warning for the coastal areas in the western and northern regions of Viti Levu, including the routes from Sigatoka to Nadi, Lautoka, Ba through Tavua to Rakiraki, along with the interior areas of Ba, Ra, and Nadroga/Navosa, as well as various island groups such as Yasawa, Mamanuca, Vatulele, Kadavu, Vanua Levu, and Taveuni. These warnings extend to smaller islands, Lau, and the Lomaiviti groups.

Flood alerts are in effect for all flood-prone areas adjacent to and downstream of Fiji’s major rivers, and a flash flood warning is active for low-lying areas susceptible to flooding, particularly in Vanua Levu and the interior and western sections of Viti Levu.

Residents should be prepared for periods of rain, which may be heavy at times and accompanied by thunderstorms, as TD01F approaches. The expected strong northwest winds will accompany the disturbance until it passes the region later tomorrow.

With the ground already saturated, localized heavy rainfall could trigger flash flooding in vulnerable areas, and river levels in major waterways are projected to rise as more rain falls.

In summary, while the disturbance poses potential challenges, community preparedness and timely warnings may help mitigate risks associated with flooding and strong winds. It’s an opportunity for residents to come together, ensure their safety, and remain vigilant as weather conditions evolve.
