More rainfall is anticipated this week as the Fiji Meteorological Services has issued a heavy rain warning for much of the country. This warning comes after the agency published a special weather bulletin explaining that a trough of low pressure is bringing along associated clouds, showers, and persistent rain, expected to lead to heavy downpours and a few thunderstorms today.
Significant rainfall has already been reported across various locations since last Sunday. Notable measurements include Wairikicake station at 91 millimeters, Dreketilailai with 82.5 mm, Bukuya at 56 mm, Nanoko recording 81.5 mm, Udu Point at 79.5 mm, Rarawai with 55 mm, Keiyasi reaching 70 mm, and Dobuilevu registering 52.5 mm of rainfall.
Forecasters are advising the public to remain vigilant due to the ongoing heavy weather conditions. The bulletin warns of potential flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas, which may impact informal settlements, businesses, and Irish crossings, leading to disruptions in traffic. There is also concern about surface flooding in urban areas with inadequate drainage. With wet roads and reduced visibility during heavy downpours, the risk of road accidents is heightened.
Despite the challenging weather, the heavy rains can also lead to beneficial outcomes such as replenishing local water supply sources and supporting agricultural needs, fostering a sense of resilience within communities.
