The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a heavy rain alert for the country’s maritime regions as a trough of low pressure hovers over the area. The regions affected include the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, Viti Levu, Kadavu, nearby smaller islands, as well as the Lau and Lomaiviti groups.
The weather system is predicted to bring heavy rain and thunderstorms, resulting in localized downpours that could lead to flash flooding in vulnerable low-lying areas. While the trough is expected to weaken by tomorrow, its impact will still be felt, with periods of heavy rainfall continuing across different parts of Fiji.
Areas under the alert, particularly Yasawa, Mamanuca, Viti Levu, Kadavu, and adjacent islands, may experience sporadic heavy rain and thunderstorms. Other regions in Fiji could witness occasional rain accompanied by isolated thunderstorms and significant rainfall.
The system is likely to cause localized flooding in susceptible areas and minor roads, affecting traffic flow due to submerged low-lying crossings and reducing visibility for drivers and mariners.
The Fiji Met Office is advising caution, urging individuals traveling in the affected areas or engaging in marine activities to take extra care. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official weather updates and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
As communities prepare for potential disruptions, it’s important to stay vigilant and proactive. Together, residents can work towards minimizing the impact of adverse weather and ensuring safety for all.
