Fiji Braces for Heavy Rain: Safety Tips for Residents

Spread the love

The Divisional Commissioner for Northern Fiji, Uraia Rainima, has issued a critical safety advisory in response to ongoing heavy rainfall that is affecting both the Northern Division and the broader Fiji region. With forecasts indicating that conditions may deteriorate further in the coming days, the Commissioner stressed the importance of vigilance and preparedness to ensure the safety of residents, particularly those in flood-prone areas.

Rainima highlighted that rising water levels have already impacted low-lying regions and crossings, putting residents at risk. He urged the community to remain proactive in safeguarding their families and properties as the risk of flooding increases.

Key safety measures recommended include:

1. Avoiding flooded areas and not attempting to cross dangerous waters, particularly for children and vulnerable individuals.
2. Preparing essential emergency packs with food, clothing, medications, and critical documents in case evacuation is necessary.
3. For farmers, it’s advised to relocate livestock to higher grounds and secure feed and other supplies.

The Commissioner’s Office is committed to closely monitoring the weather situation and will continue to provide timely updates. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and to collaborate with emergency services.

For assistance, residents can reach out to the Divisional Office or their local police station as needed.

While the circumstances are challenging, communities coming together to support one another and heed safety advice can foster resilience. It is a reminder of the strength and unity that emerges during testing times, as families, neighbors, and local authorities work hand in hand to navigate the storm and protect what matters most.
