The Divisional Commissioner for Northern Fiji, Uraia Rainima, has issued an important safety advisory in light of ongoing heavy rainfall affecting the Northern Division and the entire Fiji Group. The Fiji Meteorological Service has warned that weather conditions are expected to deteriorate over the next few days.

Rainima stressed that ensuring the safety of residents is of utmost concern, especially for farmers and their livelihoods. He urged the community to stay vigilant and take proactive measures to protect their families and neighborhoods as water levels have already impacted low-lying regions and crossings.

With further rainfall anticipated, Rainima has specifically advised residents, particularly those living in flood-prone areas, to prioritize safety. He outlined several key safety measures:

1. Avoid flooded areas: Residents should not attempt to cross flooded water and should keep children and vulnerable individuals away from dangerous locations.
2. Prepare early: It is essential to pack crucial items, such as food, clothing, medicines, and important documents, in case evacuation becomes necessary.
3. Livestock safety: Farmers are encouraged to move livestock to higher ground and secure feed and supplies to ensure their animals are well cared for during the adverse weather conditions.

The Commissioner’s Office will be closely monitoring the situation and will provide timely updates as necessary. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official announcements and to cooperate with emergency services.

For assistance, residents can reach out to the Commissioner Northern’s Office or their nearest police station in case of emergencies, further ensuring community safety during this challenging time.

As the community bands together to navigate these tough weather conditions, there is hope that by remaining vigilant and proactive, they can protect each other and recover swiftly from any challenges posed by the severe weather.
