A heavy rain warning has been issued for the Western Division, Yasawa and Mamanuca Groups, Kadavu, and surrounding smaller islands, according to the Nadi Weather Office. Additionally, a heavy rain alert is in effect for the regions of Macuata and northern Bua Province.
The Nadi Weather Office attributed the adverse weather to a slow-moving trough of low pressure over Fiji, combined with Category 1 Tropical Cyclone URMIL, which is passing southwest of the islands. As a result, strong, moist northwesterly winds are expected, along with active rain bands beginning later on Saturday.
In the affected areas, including the Western Division, Yasawa, and Mamanuca Groups, residents should prepare for occasional showers, which may intensify into heavy rain and thunderstorms. The forecast indicates that by Saturday evening, rain will become more frequent and could lead to localized flash flooding, especially in low-lying areas.
Similarly, Macuata and Northern Bua Province will initially experience occasional showers with isolated thunderstorms. However, from late Sunday, the rain is expected to increase drastically, leading to potential flash flooding and hazardous conditions in low-lying regions.
The Nadi Weather Office has warned of various impacts associated with this weather system. These may include flash flooding in communities, traffic disruptions, wet road conditions, reduced visibility, and an elevated risk of road accidents. Residents are advised to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure safety amidst these challenging weather conditions.
