A heavy rain alert has been issued for the regions of Vanua Levu, Taveuni, and nearby smaller islands, as well as the Lomaiviti, Central, and Northern Lau groups. This weather warning comes as officials report that a slow-moving trough of low pressure is generating clouds and showers over the southern and eastern areas of Fiji.
In addition, a second trough situated just northeast of Fiji is progressing southwards, expected to impact the nation starting later today and continuing through Saturday. Residents in Vanua Levu, Taveuni, and surrounding smaller islands can anticipate occasional showers, possible thunderstorms, and isolated heavy rainfalls.
Cloudy conditions along with showers and localized thunderstorms are forecast for various areas including Sigatoka-Korolevu, Serua-Namosi, Navua-Suva-Nasinu, and parts of the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, as well as Northern Bua and Macuata. Other regions may experience predominantly fine weather, although afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms are still possible.
Forecasters caution that the frequency of showers is expected to rise and rain will intensify over the affected areas, specifically in Vanua Levu, Taveuni, and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, beginning later today. In light of these conditions, residents in the impacted areas are urged to stay vigilant, keep abreast of weather updates, and take appropriate actions to safeguard themselves, especially those in low-lying and flood-prone zones.
