The topical disturbance known as TD 01F is predicted to bring substantial rainfall to the Fiji Group until tomorrow. The Fiji Meteorological Service reported that as of midday today, TD 01F was located approximately 240 km west of Yasawa-i-rara and 270 km west-northwest of Nadi, moving southeast at a speed of about 20 km/h.
A heavy rain warning is currently in place across the entire Fiji group, while a strong wind advisory is active for the coastal areas of the western and northern parts of Viti Levu, including areas from Sigatoka to Nadi, Lautoka, Ba through Tavua to Rakiraki, as well as the interiors of Ba, Ra, and Nadroga/Navosa. Other regions under warning include the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, Vatulele, Kadavu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni, nearby smaller islands, and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups.
Additionally, a flood alert is ongoing for all flood-prone regions near major rivers, with a flash flood warning activated for low-lying areas and small streams on Vanua Levu and the western and interior parts of Viti Levu. As TD 01F approaches, most areas can expect heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, coupled with strong northwest winds until the system exits the region tomorrow.
Given the already saturated ground, localized heavy rainfall could lead to flash flooding in susceptible areas downstream of major rivers. River levels throughout Fiji are anticipated to rise as the disturbance approaches, resulting in increases in overall water levels in rivers across the nation.
In light of these weather conditions, the community’s preparedness and vigilance are crucial. Residents are encouraged to stay updated with weather alerts and exercise caution, especially in flood-prone areas.
This situation serves as a reminder of the power of nature and the importance of community resilience in facing environmental challenges. With appropriate precautions and readiness, the people of Fiji can navigate this weather event effectively.
