Fiji Braces for Heavy Rain as Flash Flood Risk Rises

The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a warning for heavy rain across the country, raising concerns as persistent wet weather continues to impact the islands. A slow-moving trough of low pressure remains over Fiji, causing significant rainfall, particularly in low-lying areas, as periods of rain and thunderstorms are expected to persist until tomorrow.

Recent rainfall measurements over the last 24 hours indicate substantial downpours, with Tubenasolo recording 92.5mm, Narayabale 81.5mm, Lautoka 71.5mm, and Nagado 68.5mm. These conditions heighten the risk of flash flooding in vulnerable areas, especially in informal settlements and locations prone to surface flooding due to inadequate drainage systems. Motorists are advised to exercise caution due to wet roads and reduced visibility, as well as the potential for travel disruptions.

Authorities are urging residents to stay alert and informed about the evolving weather conditions and to take necessary safety measures. This includes planning essential travel only and remaining prepared for flash flooding or changes in road conditions. While heavy rains can pose challenges to day-to-day life, they also contribute to replenishing the local water supply, vital for agriculture and general community needs.

In line with warnings from similar past advisories, community awareness and preparedness remain key to navigating adverse weather conditions. Encouraging solidarity and cooperation among residents can enhance safety and resilience during these challenging times, as Fiji continues grappling with the effects of the ongoing heavy rain.
