FIJI GLOBAL NEWS

Beyond the headline

A trough of low pressure over Fiji, together with a moist northerly wind flow, will bring widespread cloud, showers and periods of rain through tomorrow. Several areas can expect isolated thunderstorms and locally heavy falls before conditions gradually ease from tomorrow.

The heaviest rain and isolated thunderstorms with heavy falls are forecast for the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, western Viti Levu (including Nadi, Lautoka and Ba districts), Kadau and nearby smaller islands, as well as the Lau and Lomaiviti groups and Kadavu. These areas should prepare for frequent showers and potential downpours; localised heavy falls may lead to flash flooding of low-lying areas. Moderate northeasterly winds and moderate seas are expected in these zones.

Elsewhere across the group there will be occasional showers with a risk of afternoon or evening thunderstorms producing heavy falls, particularly over Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Townships such as Navua, Suva and Nausori can expect occasional showers with afternoon thunderstorms likely (tomorrow’s forecasted range: 24–31°C, rising slightly to 25–32°C on Friday). Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, Tavua and Rakiraki are also likely to see rain and isolated thunderstorms with heavy falls (tomorrow 25–32°C). Labasa, Savusavu, Nabouwalu and Taveuni will see occasional showers and afternoon thunderstorms with heavy falls (tomorrow 24–31°C).

The outlook for Friday is for cloudy periods with some showers across Serua–Namosi, Navua–Suva–Nausori, Tailevu–Naitasiri–Ra, eastern Macuata, Cakaudrove, southern Bua, Taveuni and nearby islands, plus the Lau and Lomaiviti groups and Kadavu. Many other areas should be fine apart from afternoon or evening showers, but afternoon thunderstorms with heavy falls remain likely over Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Expect moderate easterly winds and moderate seas; as before, localised heavy falls may lead to flash flooding in low-lying districts.

Rotuma is also affected by a trough with a moist easterly flow. The island will see cloudy periods with some showers and isolated thunderstorms with heavy falls, accompanied by moderate to fresh easterly winds and moderate to rough seas. Temperatures around Rotuma are expected near 25–31°C with a similar pattern carrying into Friday.
