The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued warnings as an active trough of low pressure significantly impacts the region. This weather system is leading to heavy rainfall, strong winds, and an increased risk of flash flooding across the country.
Currently, a heavy rain warning is in place for all of Fiji, while Viti Levu is under a flash flood warning and Vanua Levu is experiencing a flash flood alert. The Western Division, together with the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, Kadavu, Lau, Lomaiviti, Macuata, Bua, Taveuni, and nearby smaller islands, are also facing strong wind warnings.
Forecasts predict that north to northwest winds could reach speeds of 40–45 kilometers per hour, with gusts possibly reaching up to 75 kilometers per hour in certain areas. Conditions are expected to improve as winds are anticipated to decrease later tomorrow. However, the sea conditions continue to be rough and may pose challenges along the coasts.
The rain is predicted to range from occasional to heavy showers, with isolated thunderstorms also likely. Localized heavy rain is particularly concerning, as it may lead to flash flooding in vulnerable low-lying areas.
Residents are advised to take precautions and stay informed about weather updates, as the situation remains dynamic. The community’s resilience will be tested, but there is hope that conditions will stabilize shortly, allowing the country to recover from these adverse weather impacts.
