A heavy rain alert is currently in effect across the entire Fiji Group, as unsettled weather conditions are expected to continue until Saturday. The Fiji Meteorological Service reports that a trough of low pressure, along with associated clouds, showers, and rain, is impacting the region.
Forecasts indicate that through to midnight tonight, there will be occasional rain, with heavy downpours and thunderstorms particularly over the Northern Division, Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, and the western and northern parts of Viti Levu. Areas including Korolevu to Sigatoka, Nadi to Ba, Tavua, Ra to Rakiraki, as well as Kadavu and smaller nearby islands, are expected to experience these weather conditions.
In addition to these regions, other areas may also encounter occasional rain, isolated heavy rainfall, and thunderstorms. As the day progresses, rain is anticipated to diminish to a mere shower in the Eastern Division before gradually moving to the other parts of Fiji.
The Met Service has cautioned that the continued heavy rainfall could potentially result in flash flooding, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone regions. Alongside this, moderate to fresh northerly winds are predicted, which may become gusty during periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms.
Given the potential for significant rainfall and storm conditions, residents are advised to stay informed and prepared for possible disruptions in their areas. This weather alert serves as a reminder of the importance of safety measures during adverse weather conditions.
