Fiji Braces for Floods: Minister Urges Caution as Evacuations Begin

The Minister for Rural and Maritime Development, Sakiasi Ditoka, has urged Fijians to limit their movement as severe weather conditions, including heavy rain and flooding, affect the country. In a press conference held at the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO), he advised the public to cancel gatherings and stay at home to ensure their safety during this extreme weather event.

The Fiji Meteorological Service has indicated that a trough of low pressure is causing persistent heavy showers across the nation, leading to ongoing flood warnings, particularly for low-lying areas. Mr. Ditoka highlighted that only essential travel should be undertaken as the Fiji Police Force prepares to enforce restrictions on movement.

In terms of evacuations, two homes in Semo Village and nine in Nalele, Nadroga, have experienced partial damage from flooding, with no casualties reported. Currently, several roads are impassable, and six evacuation centers in the Western Division are housing 312 evacuees. The centers are located at various facilities, including Andrews Primary School and Saioni Church.

The Minister expressed gratitude to the police for their role in facilitating safe evacuations. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has issued warnings regarding potential health risks associated with flooding, particularly waterborne diseases like typhoid and diarrhea. Dr. Tudravu urged residents to boil drinking water and store it securely, advising parents to keep children away from contaminated floodwaters.

Communities are encouraged to prepare by storing essential supplies—food, water, and medicines—above potential flood levels. Public health officials are actively conducting awareness campaigns and managing health issues in affected areas, notably in Nadi.

Mr. Ditoka also called on families and community leaders to collaborate with the government to ensure preparedness. He emphasized the importance of having enough food, water, and emergency supplies for several days.
