Major flooding has impacted various regions across the country, with Rakiraki experiencing some of the most severe effects following heavy rainfall that began early this morning.
Authorities have implemented road closures in Rakiraki Town due to floodwaters overwhelming the area and surrounding communities, making access nearly impossible. The Naqoro Flats region is currently submerged, and many parts of the town remain inundated as rain persists.
A Flash Flood Warning is in effect for the entirety of Viti Levu, while a Flash Flood Alert continues for Vanua Levu, as unsettled weather patterns affect the Fijian archipelago.
The Fiji Meteorological Service reports that Tropical Cyclone URMIL, categorized as a Category 2 system, is located west-southwest of Kadavu and is moving southeast. The active rain bands associated with the cyclone, coupled with strong northwesterly winds, are significantly contributing to the adverse weather conditions throughout the country.
Weather officials have cautioned that these ongoing conditions increase the risk of flash flooding and riverine flooding, particularly in areas prone to such incidents. As authorities continue to monitor the situation, residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
