The National Disaster Risk Management Office has issued a strong warning to Fijians to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions as a flash flood alert is currently in effect for the Southern and Central Eastern Divisions. This includes regions from Navua, Suva, and Nausori extending to Tailevu North and Ovalau, as well as Kadavu and southern Vanua Levu.

In addition to the flash flood alert, a Heavy Rain Alert is also active for Viti Levu’s southern and eastern areas, Taveuni, nearby smaller islands, Kadavu, and surrounding islands, as well as the Lau and Lomaiviti Groups. The heavy rainfall is expected to lead to flooding in areas such as drainages, small streams, low water bridges, iris crossings, roads, and properties situated in low-lying locations.

Authorities are emphasizing the importance of safety, urging residents to steer clear of flooded areas and to avoid crossing or swimming in dangerous waters. The Fiji Meteorological Services have noted that a trough of low pressure, combined with clouds and rain, is slowly moving over the southern and eastern parts of the country and is predicted to extend its effects to additional regions starting tomorrow.

As Fiji prepares to face these weather challenges, local communities are encouraged to remain informed and heed safety advisories to mitigate potential risks associated with flooding and heavy rains.
