Tropical Cyclone Seru is expected to bring additional flash flood threats, as warned by Uraia Rainima, the Commissioner of Northern Fiji. During a recent press conference at Macuata House in Labasa, Rainima emphasized the need for residents to prepare for the impending cyclone, highlighting the increased risk of flooding in areas that have already suffered due to Tropical Cyclone Rae.
Following an initial assessment of the damage, it was reported that some regions are still experiencing flooding and are in the slow process of recovery. The Fiji Roads Authority, along with various agencies, is actively working to restore roads and crossings affected by the harsh weather.
With forecasts indicating heavy rainfall ahead, Rainima expressed his hope that communities already impacted won’t endure further calamities. He reassured the public that discussions have taken place with relevant stakeholders to tackle flash flood issues particularly in the low-lying areas of Labasa town.
Rainima also pointed out the need for enhanced drainage systems, particularly in parts of Labasa that are prone to flooding during extended rainy spells. “We have come to agreements to upgrade these drainage infrastructures this week and into early next week, ensuring that residents can see progress at key exit points,” he stated.
The proactive stance and transparent communication from the Commissioner’s office demonstrate a strong commitment to community safety and preparedness amidst ongoing adverse weather conditions. With local government efforts and community cooperation, there is optimism that the challenges posed by Cyclone Seru can be effectively managed.
By staying informed and following safety advisories, residents can unite and navigate these challenging situations together, fostering resilience within the community.
