Tropical Depression 09F has officially strengthened into Tropical Cyclone Urmil, marking the first named storm of the 2025–2026 Tropical Cyclone Season. The Fiji Meteorological Service reported earlier today that the system was intensifying and anticipated it would reach cyclone status within hours as it advanced southward of Vanuatu.

Currently, Tropical Cyclone Urmil is positioned at approximately 18.6 degrees South and 167.8 degrees East, situated about 110 kilometers south-southwest of Port Vila, and roughly 1,010 kilometers west of Nadi. The cyclone is moving south-southeast at a speed of around 10 kilometers per hour.

Although the cyclone’s center is positioned west of Fiji, the country can expect to experience the impacts of related rainbands and strong to gusty winds. Warnings for strong winds are active for the waters surrounding the Yasawa and Mamanuca islands, as well as southwest Viti Levu. Additionally, alerts for heavy rainfall are in effect for the Western Division and Kadavu.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and are encouraging the public to remain updated with official forecasts and advisory information. With the onset of Cyclone Urmil, there is an opportunity for communities to review their preparedness plans and ensure safety measures are in place ahead of potential adverse weather conditions.
