A strong weather system is currently affecting Fiji, prompting heavy rain and flooding warnings across the entire nation. An active trough of low pressure has led to significant cloud cover and rainfall throughout the Fijian islands.
Authorities have issued a flood warning for areas prone to flooding along the Ba, Nasivi (Tavua), and Nakauvadra (Rakiraki) rivers. Additionally, a broader flood alert is in place for regions adjacent to and downstream of all major rivers, while a flash flood warning covers all low-lying flood-prone areas throughout Fiji.
The coastal land areas of western and northern Viti Levu, including Sigatoka, Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, and Tavua, are also under a strong wind warning. This alert extends to the interior regions of Ba, Ra, Nadroga/Navosa, Serua/Namosi, Naitasiri, Tailevu North province, as well as the Yasawa and Mamanuca islands, Vatulele, Kadavu, and nearby smaller islands.
Forecasts indicate that another trough of low pressure will arrive from the west, expected to generate additional rainfall from tomorrow until Sunday. This anticipated precipitation, combined with already saturated ground conditions, raises concerns for increased flash flooding in vulnerable areas and small streams across the country.
With the heightened risk of river flooding, particularly during high tides, the Fiji Meteorological Service is closely monitoring the situation. They will continue to provide updates on weather warnings and forecasts to keep the public informed.
This situation reminds us of the importance of preparation and resilience in the face of natural events. Fiji’s community spirit and the prompt response from meteorological services will be crucial in navigating the challenges posed by this weather system. With vigilance and cooperation, the country can work together to minimize potential impacts and ensure safety for all residents.
