Fiji is preparing for substantial rainfall, flash flooding, and strong to near-gale winds starting this Sunday, according to the Fiji Meteorological Office. A weak low-pressure system positioned far northwest of Fiji is anticipated to intensify gradually and move southeast towards the islands. When it enters Fiji waters, it could potentially develop into a tropical disturbance or depression.
The meteorological office has issued warnings that an active trough of low pressure and strong winds will affect various regions of the nation from Sunday onward. A strong wind warning is in effect for the Northern Division and northeastern areas of Viti Levu, including Tailevu North through Ra – Rakiraki up to Tavua, as well as the Yasawa, Mamanuca, Lau, and Lomaiviti Groups.
Additionally, an alert for heavy rain applies to the entire Northern Division and the Yasawa Group. Recent reports indicate that significant rainfall has already been observed, with 107.5mm recorded at Nadarivatu and 88.5mm at Lautoka Mill, underscoring the pressing risk of flooding in low-lying areas and near major riverbanks.
As communities prepare for these potentially hazardous weather conditions, the Fiji Meteorological Service stresses the importance of vigilance and readiness. Mariners are also warned about hazardous sea conditions, with expected wind speeds of 20-30 knots that could pose navigation challenges.
In confronting these weather challenges, the unity and resilience of the Fijian people are essential. This situation presents an opportunity for communities to come together, ensuring mutual safety and support during potential crises. Despite the stormy weather ahead, there is optimism that through collective preparedness and cooperation, the impact of nature’s unpredictability can be effectively managed.
