A heavy rain warning remains active for the northern and eastern regions of Fiji, while it has been lifted for the rest of the country. The warning applies specifically to Ra, Naitasiri, Tailevu North, Vanua Levu, Taveuni, and nearby smaller islands, as well as the Lau and Lomaiviti groups.
Weather officials have reported that an active trough of low pressure is currently over the northern and eastern parts of Fiji, causing slow-moving cloud and rain, which is expected to persist until Sunday. Forecasts predict occasional to heavy rainfall, with thunderstorms likely in these areas.
For other regions, cloudy conditions with some showers are anticipated, along with afternoon thunderstorms and isolated heavy rainfall. Forecast confidence for these conditions has been rated as moderate to high.
Recent significant rainfall measurements highlight the impact of the weather, with Nadarivatu recording 123 millimeters, Wairikicake 99 millimeters, and RKS Lodoni 96.5 millimeters within the past 24 hours.
Authorities are cautioning residents about potential impacts such as flash flooding in vulnerable areas, especially near rivers, streams, low-lying informal settlements, and Irish crossings, which may disrupt traffic. Moreover, surface flooding in urban areas with inadequate drainage, combined with wet roads and decreased visibility during heavy rain, raises the risk of road accidents. A flash flood warning is currently in effect for the entire nation of Fiji.
This warning serves as a reminder to the public to remain vigilant and prepared as the adverse weather persists, highlighting the importance of community awareness and safety during such conditions.
