Tropical Cyclone Rae is currently moving away from Fiji, but it continues to pose significant risks as strong winds and heavy rainfall are anticipated in the upcoming days. The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a heavy rain warning for the Fiji Group, which raises concerns over potential flooding in low-lying regions and the possibility of road closures.
As of 6 PM yesterday, TC Rae was situated around 80 kilometers east-north-east of Moala Island in the Lau Group, carrying sustained winds of up to 95 kilometers per hour, with gusts likely to increase. A storm warning remains active for several areas, including Lakeba, Moce, and Vatoa, while a strong wind warning is in effect for parts of Vanua Levu and northeastern Viti Levu.
In light of the cyclone’s threat, the Fiji Police Force has activated standby teams that are prepared for immediate deployment. Assistant Commissioner of Police Livai Driu highlighted that divisional operations teams are monitoring the situation closely, having already received reports concerning the cyclone’s impacts, particularly in the Lau region.
Additionally, the Ministry of Health has released a health advisory related to the dangers posed by heavy rainfall and flooding. Important health precautions include securely storing drinking water, boiling any untreated water to prevent diseases such as cholera and dysentery, and staying away from flood-prone areas.
Fijians are encouraged to remain vigilant, stay updated on weather reports, and follow official advisories closely. Historically, community preparedness has been essential in mitigating the effects of severe weather, and collective action is vital for resilience. As the people of Fiji face the challenges brought on by TC Rae, their unity and proactive responses will be crucial in navigating this weather-related threat.
This ongoing situation serves as a testament to the strength and resilience of the Fijian community. By working together, they can enhance safety and demonstrate their enduring spirit in the face of nature’s challenges.
