A topical disturbance, identified as TD 01F, is anticipated to bring heavy rainfall to the Fiji Group until tomorrow, with a low chance of development into a tropical cyclone. As reported by the Fiji Meteorological Service, TD 01F was noted to be approximately 240 kilometers west of Yasawa-i-rara and 270 kilometers west-northwest of Nadi at midday today. It is currently moving southeast at a speed of around 20 kilometers per hour.
As a precaution, a heavy rain warning has been issued for the entire Fiji group. Additionally, a strong wind warning is applicable for the coastal areas in the western and northern regions of Viti Levu, including locations from Sigatoka to Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, Tavua to Rakiraki, as well as areas like Ba’s interior, Ra, Nadroga/Navosa, Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, Vatulele, Kadavu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni, and smaller nearby islands, including Lau and the Lomaiviti groups.
Flood alerts are in place for flood-prone areas adjacent to and downstream of the major rivers, while a flash flood warning is effective for low-lying areas susceptible to flooding, particularly in Vanua Levu and the interior and western parts of Viti Levu. The approaching system is expected to bring periods of rainfall, heavy at times, along with thunderstorms, coupled with strong northwestern winds as it progresses toward and eventually out of the country.
Given the saturated ground conditions, localized heavy rainfall could result in flash flooding in susceptible regions downstream of major rivers and smaller streams. Major river levels are projected to rise as TD 01F approaches, contributing further to the rainfall accumulation.
In light of these weather developments, residents are urged to take precautions and remain vigilant as the situation unfolds. Community awareness looks to play a crucial role in ensuring safety during this challenging weather period.
