The year 2024 has proven to be a significant milestone for Fiji Amateur Boxing, largely thanks to the efforts of national coach Cam Todd. Since his appointment in May of last year, Todd has focused on enhancing the sport’s profile and opportunities for athletes.

Building on their experiences from the 2023 IBA Men’s World Amateur Boxing Championship in Tashkent, Todd and the Fiji Amateur Boxing Association dedicated themselves to increasing the time their boxers spent in the ring, both locally and internationally. This year saw remarkable success in arranging ten international competitions in Fiji, featuring teams from Australia and New Zealand.

Todd proudly highlights the team’s achievements at the June 2024 Youth & Junior Oceania Boxing Championships in Tahiti, where Fiji’s junior youth team excelled, finishing with five gold medals, five silver medals, and a bronze. This improvement is particularly impressive, as they secured only two bronze medals in the previous year, showcasing the rising talent among these young athletes.

In addition to fostering male participation, Todd is also making strides to encourage greater female involvement in the sport. Since last year, the number of female boxers has surged from just two to between 15 and 20, with participants as young as ten years old.

Looking ahead, Todd is optimistic about the upcoming boxing season in 2025, with plans in place to broaden their competitive horizons by sending teams to international events.

This optimistic trajectory not only highlights the achievements of Fiji Amateur Boxing but also reflects a promising future for its athletes, suggesting that with ongoing support and dedication, they may continue to build on their successes in the years to come.
