The family of Ubayd Haider, a talented boxer from Fiji, is seeking clarity on the circumstances surrounding his tragic passing following a fight on October 26. Haider, who was in a coma for 16 days after suffering a serious injury during the IBO Asia Pacific Featherweight title match against China’s Runqi Zhou, succumbed to his injuries at Lautoka’s Aspen Hospital. His father, Gyan Singh, a seasoned boxing trainer, expressed the family’s devastation over the loss and emphasized the need for answers regarding the events of that night.
Haider collapsed while heading to his changing room after losing the bout by technical knockout in the ninth round. He was quickly transported to a medical facility, where he underwent brain surgery. The incident raises questions about safety protocols, as per the Boxing Commission of Fiji’s regulations, which mandate that promoters ensure a stretcher is available ringside before fights commence.
Runqi Zhou paid tribute to Haider on social media, honoring his fighting spirit and extending condolences to his family. At just 25 years old, Haider leaves behind his wife, Helen Margaret Singh, and their two children. Helen expressed her love and gratitude for their time together, cherishing the memories and the family they created.
In light of the incident, the Government and Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF) have initiated a Commission of Inquiry to thoroughly investigate the events leading up to Haider’s death, with plans to question at least ten individuals involved.
As the boxing community mourns, Haider’s funeral preparations are ongoing, and public viewing will be held at the FMF Gym. His funeral service is set for later in the day, with a burial at the Raralevu Muslim Cemetery.
Despite the tragedy, this situation highlights the importance of ensuring athlete safety and may lead to systemic changes in the boxing industry, potentially preventing further tragedies in the future. The inquiry could pave the way for improved safety protocols and regulations, ensuring that the well-being of fighters is prioritized in all competitions.
Summary: Ubayd Haider’s family seeks answers following his death after a boxing match, leading to a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the incident.
