Fiji’s Amateur Boxing team, led by head coach Cam Todd, celebrated a commendable performance at the recent New Zealand Invitational competition held over the weekend. Thirteen Fijian boxers competed in the event, achieving seven victories and enduring six losses against a robust New Zealand contingent.
Todd expressed his contentment with the results, stating, “I was very happy with the competition… my goal was to achieve at least a 50-50 record, and we have met that goal.” He praised the team’s efforts and highlighted the individual accomplishments of several boxers, notably Steven Ledua, who showcased significant skill improvement by defeating a seasoned opponent, and Liu Lapolo, who exhibited maturity and determination in securing his win. Female boxer Jasmin Daunakamakama, although defeated by national champions, fought valiantly and demonstrated great heart.
The competition served as a valuable learning experience, prompting Todd to identify areas for further development, such as enhancing technical skills, increasing intensity in the ring, and focusing on weight management. These insights will be integrated into their training regime leading up to upcoming events in November, which include the Sukuna Bowl and the Golden Gloves.
Todd also expressed gratitude to the Fijian community in New Zealand for their support, which included donations of food for the boxers. The collaboration and encouragement from both local fans and the broader community reflect a hopeful sentiment for the future of boxing in Fiji, as the sport continues to grow and cultivate new talent. With ongoing dedication and training, the Fijian team is poised to further excel on an international stage, promising an exciting future for boxing in the nation.
