The Boxing Commission of Fiji is set to host a significant meeting later this year, bringing together the Fiji Amateur Boxing Association (FABA), the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC), and representatives from the International Boxing Association (IBA). This meeting, prompted by the request of Minister of Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru, aims to address the ongoing disputes between the rival boxing organizations and forge a collaborative path forward to enhance opportunities for local boxers.
In light of the current tensions, FABA and FASANOC have firmly stated that any affiliations with the rival IBA will lead to the suspension of boxers, coaches, and officials from competing in prestigious events like the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, and Pacific Games. Despite this, the IBA presents substantial benefits by offering programs that grant local amateur boxers high-level international exposure and the chance to earn significant prize money.
Chairman Adi Narayan has highlighted the difficult decision local boxers face amidst this rivalry. He remarked, “This is a tough decision boxers will have to make: either follow a path that can bring them fame through traditional amateur routes or pursue their boxing careers through the IBA, where they can gain recognition and the chance to earn a living.”
Moreover, the IBA’s framework also accommodates professional boxers, creating an exciting avenue for local fighters to engage in high-caliber international bouts that allow for the chance to win substantial rewards. For those who opt to set aside their aspirations of competing in the Commonwealth, Olympics, or Pacific Games, the IBA pathway provides an excellent opportunity to transition into professional boxing through competitive international events.
This impending meeting represents a hopeful turning point for Fiji’s boxing community. For the first time, representatives from all key organizations will unite to tackle longstanding issues and work towards crafting a realistic and productive roadmap for the future of boxing in Fiji. This collaboration has the potential to not only resolve disputes but also to significantly advance the careers of local athletes in the sport.
