The year 2024 has proven to be a significant milestone for Fiji Amateur Boxing under the leadership of national coach Cam Todd. Since taking over as head coach in May 2023, Todd has implemented numerous initiatives aimed at promoting and enhancing the sport in Fiji.

Following the success of the 2023 IBA Men’s World Amateur Boxing Championship in Tashkent, Todd and the Fiji Amateur Boxing Association worked diligently to ensure their boxers received ample opportunities to compete both locally and internationally. Todd’s efforts included negotiating with other nations to bring international competition and experience to Fiji, enriching the local boxing community.

One of Todd’s notable accomplishments this year was orchestrating ten international competitions within Fiji, featuring teams from Australia and New Zealand. This influx of competition provided valuable exposure for the boxers and contributed significantly to their development.

The highlight of the year came during the June 2024 Youth & Junior Oceania Boxing Championships held in Tahiti, where Fiji’s junior youth teams emerged impressively. The team, consisting of 11 boxers, claimed five gold medals, five silver medals, and one bronze, making history and showcasing an incredible turnaround from the previous year, where the team achieved only two bronze medals. Todd expressed pride in the talent displayed by these young athletes, emphasizing that they still have much potential yet to be unlocked.

Moreover, Todd has been an advocate for increasing female participation in boxing. The program has expanded significantly, growing from just two female boxers last year to a vibrant community of 15 to 20 female boxers, ranging from 10 years old and up.

Looking ahead, Todd is optimistic about the future, with plans already underway for an even more expanded boxing season in 2025, which includes opportunities for their teams to participate in overseas competitions.

This proactive approach not only bodes well for the athletes’ growth but also highlights the growing popularity and acceptance of boxing in Fiji. The renewed focus on inclusivity and opportunity for both genders sets a commendable precedent for sports development in the region.

In summary, Fiji Amateur Boxing has made commendable progress under Todd’s direction, and the positive momentum hints at a bright future for the sport. The community’s investment in nurturing talent, especially among women, serves as an encouraging sign for aspiring athletes.
