The year 2024 has proven to be a significant milestone for Fiji Amateur Boxing, largely due to the efforts of national coach Cam Todd. Since taking the helm in May of last year, Todd has initiated a series of changes aimed at enhancing the sport’s profile. His focus has been on increasing domestic competition and international exposure for Fiji’s boxers, transitioning from the 2023 IBA Men’s World Amateur Boxing Championship in Tashkent to the upcoming Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands.
Under Todd’s leadership, the Fiji Amateur Boxing Association has worked diligently to provide more opportunities for local athletes, successfully organizing 10 international competitions in Fiji this year. This increase in activity brought teams from Australia and New Zealand, which was a remarkable achievement for the sport.
A crowning achievement for Todd’s efforts was the successful performance of the junior youth teams at the June 2024 Youth & Junior Oceania Boxing Championships in Tahiti. The team’s outcome—securing five gold, five silver, and one bronze medal—was a significant improvement from the previous year, showcasing the developing talent within Fiji.
Moreover, Todd is committed to increasing female participation in the sport, successfully expanding the number of female boxers from just two to an impressive 15 to 20, ranging from 10 years and older.
Looking ahead, Todd is optimistic about the prospects for the 2025 boxing season, with plans already being developed for overseas competitions to further bolster his team’s experience and skills.
This is an encouraging development for Fiji’s boxing community, highlighting growth, inclusivity, and a promising future for athletes under Todd’s guidance.
