The Boxing Commission of Fiji has officially suspended the license of the South Pacific Boxing Promotion (SPBP) and its promoter, Fredy Chand. This decision follows a thorough investigation related to the late Ubayd Haider, a former boxing star who had gained significant local fame.

Eroni Loganimoce, a board member of the Boxing Commission, explained that the suspension was necessitated by issues surrounding promoter Chand’s failure to comply with specific agreements established between the SPBP and the commission. Concerns had also been expressed regarding the safety and welfare of boxers associated with the promotion, as well as a lack of adequate cooperation from Chand.

The Boxing Commission emphasized that ensuring the safety of boxers in Fiji is its top priority. In response to the issues identified in Haider’s case, steps are being taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The suspension of SPBP has been in effect since Friday, November 29.

This development serves as a vital reminder of the importance of accountability in sports promotions, particularly when it comes to the health and safety of athletes. The Boxing Commission’s commitment to addressing these concerns can lead to a stronger and safer boxing environment in Fiji. By taking decisive action, they are prioritizing the well-being of boxers, which ultimately will foster a more trustworthy and secure platform for the sport.
