The Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF) has suspended the license of South Pacific Boxing Promotion (SPBP) and its promoter, Fredy Chand. This action comes in the wake of an intensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the late Ubayd Haider, a celebrated local boxer.
BCF board member Eroni Loganimoce explained that the suspension was prompted by Chand’s failure to comply with specific agreements established between the promotion and the commission. Concerns about the safety and welfare of boxers under SPBP’s jurisdiction were also significant factors in the decision. The commission emphasized its commitment to ensuring the safety of boxers in Fiji, implementing new measures to prevent similar incidents that affected Haider.
The suspension has been in place since Friday, November 29. The BCF’s proactive stance demonstrates a dedication to boxer welfare and the integrity of the sport in Fiji, which is a positive development for local boxing.
This suspension serves as a crucial reminder to promoters about their responsibility to uphold safety standards, ultimately benefiting the boxing community as a whole.
