The Boxing Commission of Fiji has suspended the license of South Pacific Boxing Promotion (SPBP) and its promoter, Fredy Chand. This action follows a thorough investigation related to the late Ubayd Haider, a former rising star and celebrated local boxer.
Eroni Loganimoce, a board member of the Boxing Commission, explained that the decision to suspend SPBP was prompted by Chand’s failure to comply with specific agreements made between the promotion and the commission. Concerns regarding the well-being of boxers associated with the promotion and a lack of cooperation from the promoter further contributed to this significant step.
Loganimoce emphasized that ensuring the safety of boxers in Fiji is a top priority, and the commission is taking necessary steps to prevent any similar incidents like that of Haider in the future. The suspension took effect on Friday, November 29.
This development reflects the Boxing Commission’s commitment to prioritize the welfare of athletes in the sport and indicates an ongoing effort to enhance the standards of boxing in Fiji. By addressing these issues head-on, there is hope for a safer and more supportive environment for boxers in the country moving forward.
