The year 2024 has proven to be a remarkable period for Fiji Amateur Boxing under the leadership of national coach Cam Todd. Since his appointment in May of last year, Todd has made significant strides in enhancing the sport.

His efforts can be traced from the 2023 IBA Men’s World Amateur Boxing Championship in Tashkent to the Pacific Games held in the Solomon Islands. Together with the Fiji Amateur Boxing Association, Todd has dedicated himself to providing boxers with increased opportunities to compete both domestically and internationally.

In his successful push to elevate the sport, Todd has helped organize an impressive 10 international competitions in Fiji this year, welcoming teams from Australia and New Zealand, which has been highly beneficial for local talent.

One of the standout achievements under his guidance was during the June 2024 Youth & Junior Oceania Boxing Championships in Tahiti. Fiji’s junior youth team performed exceptionally well, securing five gold medals, five silver medals, and a bronze—a significant improvement from the previous year’s results, where the nation earned only two bronze medals. Todd emphasized the potential of these young athletes, stating that they are just beginning to tap into their talent.

Significantly, Todd is also addressing the need for greater female participation in boxing. The number of female boxers has skyrocketed from just two last year to between 15 and 20 women, ranging from ages 10 and up, indicating a growing interest in the sport among young women.

Looking ahead, Todd is optimistic about the upcoming boxing season in 2025, with plans already underway for sending teams to compete in international events.

This focus on youth and female participation reflects a bright future for boxing in Fiji, highlighting the potential for the sport to flourish and gain recognition on a global stage.

In summary, Fiji Amateur Boxing, led by Cam Todd, is experiencing significant growth, particularly among youth and female boxers, which bodes well for the sport’s future in the nation.
