The chairman of the Boxing Commission of Fiji, Adi Narayan, has expressed his dissatisfaction with the financial support allocated to his organization by the government. Since assuming his role in July 2023, Narayan conducted thorough research on the financial requirements necessary for the effective operation of the Boxing Commission Fiji (BCF). This research culminated in a proposed budget of several hundred thousand dollars, which he presented to the Minister of Youth and Sports.

Narayan emphasized the critical need for funding, stating, “That would give us a good working budget to cater for the development of professional boxing in Fiji.” However, he expressed disappointment regarding the government’s allocation, particularly the $48,000 budget that BCF receives. He questioned how such limited resources could adequately support the aspirations and needs of the boxing community. “What do you expect from the Boxing Commission to do?” he stated, highlighting the disparity when compared to other sports such as rugby union and amateur boxing.

Narayan pointed out that despite BCF’s initiatives and the attention professional boxing has garnered on an international level, particularly in the Oceania region, the government’s backing remains insufficient. “Without money we can’t do much,” he lamented, indicating that investment is crucial to sustain and foster growth in the sport.

In response, Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, acknowledged the concerns raised by Narayan but noted that the budget for BCF has increased under his administration. He mentioned that the allocation had been raised from $30,000 under the previous government to the current $48,000. Saukuru maintained that while the Ministry is committed to supporting combat sports, they must work within the financial framework set forth by the Ministry of Finance. He confirmed that for the upcoming 2025-2026 budget, BCF has been allocated $48,913.

The ongoing discourse highlights the need for a more substantial investment in professional boxing to ensure its development and success in Fiji. As the country continues to gain recognition in the sport, increased funding could pave the way for future achievements across international platforms.
