The Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF) has put a suspension on South Pacific Boxing Promotion following the unfortunate death of local boxer Ubayd Haider, known as Nathan Singh, last month. Haider collapsed after a bout against Runqi Zhou in Nadi and tragically passed away after surgery.

In a recent press conference, BCF officials stated that the suspension of the boxing promotion’s license would take effect on November 29. Eroni Loganimoce, a board member and supervisor, explained that the decision was made due to the promoter’s failure to comply with specific agreements.

Despite previous instructions not to discuss matters on social media, the promoter persisted in doing so. Additionally, there were significant lapses in fulfilling essential medical obligations on fight day. This included inadequate ambulance services and a lack of proper drug testing as required by the International Boxing Organization (IBO). Concerns have also been raised about the promoter’s attempts to create divisions within the board, which ultimately jeopardized the safety of the fighters under his promotion.

The BCF has reiterated its commitment to prioritizing the safety of boxers and aims to prevent similar incidents in the future.

In times of challenge, the boxing community remains hopeful that these measures will lead to stronger regulations and better safety protocols, ensuring the well-being of all athletes involved in the sport. By taking these steps, the BCF demonstrates its dedication to learning from past tragedies and fostering a safer environment for boxers.
