The chair of the Fiji Boxing Commission, Adi Narayan, has lauded Mohammed Sameer Khan of Bluewater Boxing Promotions for his exceptional contributions to professional boxing over the past three years. Khan’s efforts have significantly impacted the sport, fostering opportunities for young Fijian fighters to transition to professional boxing under his promotions.
Narayan emphasized that Khan’s commitment has not only increased the number of local fighters entering the professional arena but also improved the overall standard of the sport in Fiji. This enhancement is largely attributed to the introduction of more competitive prize purses, which has raised the level of competition and contributed to more thrilling and high-quality matches.
In a statement, Narayan acknowledged Khan’s role in the evolution of boxing in Fiji, noting how boxers are now receiving significantly better financial rewards compared to previous years. “He has done great work as far as professional boxing is concerned. He has developed a lot of young boxers and is paying them good money compared to four or five years ago when boxers were receiving $100 per round,” Narayan stated.
Khan’s efforts are seen as integral to the broader growth of Fijian boxing, supported by strategic partnerships, such as the collaboration with FMF Foods Ltd and the Fijian Broadcasting Corporation. These alliances have provided invaluable media coverage and financial backing, helping elevate and globally promote Fiji’s boxing events.
The FBC’s commitment to inclusivity and opportunity, ensuring that all boxers have the chance to compete regardless of their previous experience levels, further underscores the positive trajectory of the sport in Fiji. These efforts are setting the stage for Fiji to become a recognized hub for boxing within the region, thus encouraging a new generation of local talents to pursue their ambitions in the sport.
As these initiatives progress, the collective enthusiasm and collaboration within Fiji’s boxing community portray a promising future, ensuring that young athletes are supported in their journeys and the rich history of boxing in the country is carried forward.
