The Fiji Amateur Boxing team is in high spirits as they prepare for the New Zealand Invitationals set to take place tomorrow. The team, under the guidance of coach Cam Todd, is eagerly looking forward to competing against local New Zealand boxers.
Todd expressed that the young athletes are highly motivated and have trained rigorously in New Zealand leading up to the competition. “The team is really excited about the competition on Saturday; they have been training really well, experiencing New Zealand, and are just keen to get to the competition and perform their best,” he stated. While Todd emphasizes development as the primary focus for these young athletes, he remains optimistic about their chances to secure some wins.
“In coaching, I’m performance-based,” he explained. “While winning is nice, what’s essential is that my boxers perform at their absolute best. I believe they all have a good chance, and I’m confident we will achieve some wins on Saturday.”
Additionally, three local Fijian coaches—Rusi Qarasaumaki, Tui Lomaloma, and Ana Ledua—are also benefitting from this opportunity to enhance their coaching skills. Todd has been actively working with them to assess their techniques and provide scenarios to help upskill their coaching abilities. “At this stage, I’m happy with what they are doing, and they are on the right track,” he added.
Notably, the team includes its youngest member, who is only 11 years old, highlighting the growing involvement of youth in the sport. The New Zealand Invitationals will begin tomorrow at the Wairarapa Boxing Academy and are scheduled to conclude on Sunday.
This event not only represents a competitive platform for these young athletes but also marks a significant step in developing amateur boxing within Fiji, showcasing their commitment to nurturing future talents while strengthening ties across the region. The positive atmosphere and focus on performance suggest a bright outlook for Fiji boxing as it continues to evolve and inspire young athletes.
