The family of Ubayd Haider, a champion boxer from Fiji, is seeking clarity regarding the circumstances surrounding his death following a boxing match on October 26 at Prince Charles Park, Nadi. Haider, whose real name is Nathan Singh, passed away at Lautoka’s Aspen Hospital after spending 16 days in a coma and undergoing brain surgery.

His father, Gyan Singh, a veteran boxing trainer, expressed the family’s devastation, emphasizing the potential and talent Haider possessed as a boxer. He stated their need for answers about the events leading to his son’s tragic fate.

In the bout, Haider suffered a technical knockout in the ninth round against Runqi Zhou from China and collapsed as he made his way to the changing room afterward. Although he was immediately attended to by teammates and promoters, he had to be taken to multiple hospitals for treatment before eventually succumbing to his injuries.

The Boxing Commission of Fiji requires that promoters ensure a stretcher is available ringside, and concerns have arisen about adherence to these safety regulations during the fight. Runqi Zhou extended his condolences through social media, recognizing Haider as a fighter until the end, and shared his sympathies for the family and the people of Fiji.

Haider, 25, leaves behind his wife, Helen Margaret Singh, and their two children. Helen expressed her love and gratitude for the time they shared, cherishing their memories and the life they built together.

In response to this incident, the Fijian government and the Boxing Commission of Fiji have initiated a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the matter, led by Pita Driti. The inquiry is expected to question at least 10 individuals involved.

The funeral service for Haider will take place today, with the public viewing scheduled at FMF Gym from 3 PM to 5 PM, followed by the funeral at Lot 19 Vasant Lal Road, Laucala Beach, and burial at the Raralevu Muslim Cemetery later that evening.

This tragic situation serves as a somber reminder of the risks associated with contact sports, highlighting the importance of safety regulations and protocols in protecting athletes. As the community mourns the loss of a promising young talent, there is hope that this inquiry will bring about necessary changes to ensure the safety of all fighters in the future.
