Keleto Takele, a boxer from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), secured the gold medal in the 57–60kg category during the Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl boxing final held at the LICI Court in Suva. He achieved this victory by defeating his RFMF teammate Rusiate Qalo on points. Despite Takele’s individual success, it was the Fiji Police Force that emerged as the overall winners of the boxing competition.
Following his win, Takele expressed gratitude for the recognition, acknowledging the challenges faced in preparation for the tournament. “I thank God for the win, and we didn’t have an easy preparation for this competition,” he remarked. Throughout their month-long training camp, Takele and his fellow boxers dealt with hardships such as inadequate nutrition and rigorous early morning workouts.
This achievement holds special significance for Takele, who dedicated his victory to his father, family members in attendance, and his fellow army officers. He highlighted the invaluable support that spiritual preparation provided during difficult training sessions. Takele, participating in his seventh boxing match since joining the Army Boxing Club, emphasized the importance of boxing as a sport grounded in discipline, focus, humility, and determination.
Originally from the village of Navunikabi in Namosi, he was drawn to the sport through his brother, who is also a boxer and trainer. Takele encouraged young people to consider boxing not only for its self-defensive benefits but also for maintaining fitness.
This inspiring story not only highlights an individual’s success but also serves as a reminder of the resilience and determination required to overcome challenges in both sports and life. Boxing can be a valuable outlet for youth, promoting physical fitness and life skills that go beyond the ring.
In summary, Keleto Takele’s victory is a beacon of hope for aspiring athletes, illustrating that with dedication and perseverance, one can triumph over adversity.
