Keleto Takele, a boxer representing the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), claimed the gold medal in the 57–60kg category of the Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl boxing final held at LICI Court in Suva. He triumphed over his fellow RFMF teammate Rusiate Qalo by points.
Despite Takele’s achievement, it was the Fiji Police Force that overall won the boxing competition during the event. “I thank God for the win, and we didn’t have an easy preparation for this competition,” Takele remarked following his victory. He expressed gratitude for overcoming the challenges faced during their month-long training camp.
Labeling the Ratu Sukuna Bowl as a prestigious event that pits the RFMF against the Fiji Police Force, Takele commented on the tough preparations that included inadequate nutrition, particularly for lighter boxers, and grueling early morning training sessions. “I dedicate this win to my dad and family members who came to watch me, and also to the army officers at camp,” he said, emphasizing the importance of support from loved ones in his journey.
Takele, who has been boxing for one year, has already participated in seven matches since joining the Army Boxing Club. Originating from Navunikabi in Namosi, he noted that his older brother, also a trainer and boxer, played a crucial role in introducing him to the sport.
Addressing common misconceptions about boxing, Takele stated, “The public often think that people who take up boxing are arrogant, but this sport is about discipline, focus, humility, and determination.” He encouraged young people to engage in boxing as a means of self-defense and to improve their physical fitness.
This uplifting story serves as an inspiring reminder of the resilience and determination that athletes like Takele exhibit, as well as the importance of support systems in achieving one’s goals. His call to the youth highlights the positive aspects of sports, encouraging individuals to channel their energy into disciplines that foster self-discipline and personal growth.
