Keleto Takele, a boxer representing the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), claimed the gold medal in the 57–60kg division at the Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl boxing final held at Suva’s LICI Court. Takele secured his victory by defeating his RFMF teammate Rusiate Qalo on points.

Despite Takele’s individual success, it was the Police team that emerged as the overall winners of the boxing competition. Following his win, Takele expressed gratitude, emphasizing the challenges faced during the rigorous month-long training camp and the importance of spiritual preparation in staying resilient through tough training sessions.

“This competition stands out as a prestigious event between the RFMF and the Fiji Police Force,” Takele remarked. He highlighted the struggles faced, including inadequate nutrition for boxers in lighter weight categories and demanding early morning runs. He dedicated his victory to his family, especially his father, and the army officers who supported him.

This year marked Takele’s debut in competitive boxing, and he has participated in seven matches since joining the Army Boxing Club. Initially hailing from Navunikabi in Namosi, he credits his brother, a trainer and boxer, for encouraging him to pursue the sport.

Takele sought to change the common perception of boxing, asserting that it is not synonymous with arrogance but rather promotes discipline, focus, humility, and determination. He encouraged the youth to engage in boxing, highlighting its benefits for self-defense and physical fitness.

With his inspiring journey and dedication, Takele represents not only his military unit’s spirit but also serves as a motivational figure for aspiring boxers and the youth of Fiji.

In a nutshell, Takele’s triumph is a testament to perseverance and the positive impact sports can have on personal development and community engagement.
