Keleto Takele of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) clinched the gold medal in the 57–60kg category after a points victory over his RFMF teammate Rusiate Qalo at the Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl boxing finals held at LICI Court in Suva. Despite the individual accolades, it was the Fiji Police Force that ultimately triumphed in the overall boxing competition.
Reflecting on his victory, Takele expressed gratitude, stating, “I thank God for the win, and we didn’t have an easy preparation for this competition.” He acknowledged the difficult training regime his team endured, which included early morning runs and a strict diet. “I dedicate this win to my dad and family members that came to watch me and also the army officers at camp,” said Takele.
Takele emphasized the importance of spiritual preparation and resilience in overcoming training obstacles, noting that this was his first year in boxing and his seventh match since joining the Army Boxing Club. Hailing from the village of Navunikabi in Namosi, he was inspired to pursue boxing by his brother, who is also a trainer and boxer.
Challenging common perceptions about the sport, Takele urged the public to recognize boxing as a discipline requiring focus, humility, and determination, rather than showcasing arrogance. He encouraged local youth to embrace boxing as a means of self-defense and maintaining fitness.
In conclusion, Takele’s story serves as an inspiring example of dedication and resilience, showcasing how commitment to training and a positive mindset can lead to success. His call to younger generations to participate in boxing reflects a hopeful vision of youth engagement in sports, fostering personal development and community well-being.
